Map Darkness Across the Work Area
Engrave a labeled uniformity grid across the corners and center while holding artwork, material orientation, focus method, line interval, and settings constant. Photograph it under consistent light to reveal whether variation follows position, direction, stock, or time.
Separate Material From Machine Variation
Rotate or reposition an identified coupon while preserving the machine test when safe and practical. If the dark region follows the stock, investigate grain, coating, moisture, or surface condition; if it stays at one machine position, investigate the setup.
Flatness and Focus
Measure stock height and focus at several points. Bowed sheet, a tilted fixture, or an uneven support changes spot size and energy density across the scan. Correct the physical relationship before using a global power increase to hide the gradient.

Inspect protective windows, lenses, mirrors where applicable, fans, nozzle, and extraction path according to the model manual. Deposits or restricted flow can change output or contamination over time; use only approved cleaning methods.
Use a Uniformity Test Pattern
Combine filled areas, fine lines in both axes, and tonal steps at the corners and center. Repeat the candidate correction on fresh identified stock and save both maps with the machine configuration, focus, file, material, and date.
Read the Pattern Before Changing Power
A smooth corner-to-corner gradient points toward a different branch from narrow bands parallel to an axis or isolated dark patches that follow grain and coating. Mark the direction, spacing, and location of the variation before making a correction.
Also compare the first and last cells in a longer test. A result that changes with elapsed time can involve contamination, airflow, heat, or material condition even when a short center coupon looks uniform. Preserve the sequence so the time pattern is not lost during cleanup.
