A CNC File Handoff Checklist for Units, Origin, Geometry, and Post-Processors

A CNC handoff succeeds when another operator can identify the units, origin, geometry revision, tool list, stock, post-processor, and verification state without asking the file creator. Treat the package as a manufacturing record, not a loose export.

Define the Handoff Package and Owner

State who supplies the editable source, who creates CAM, who selects the tool, and who approves machine-ready output. The package should identify the revision, stock, finished dimensions, critical features, target machine, and any surfaces or orientations that must not change.

Confirm Units, Scale, and One Known Dimension

Do not rely on the canvas size or an import dialog. Record the intended units and compare at least one known physical dimension after every conversion. If the source lacks reliable units, stop the handoff and obtain a dimensioned reference before toolpaths are created.

Release Geometry Before Releasing Toolpaths

Inspect open contours, duplicate paths, self-intersections, curve quality, tiny segments, missing layers, mirrored geometry, mesh defects, and minimum feature size. Save the corrected geometry as a controlled revision so CAM is not rebuilt from a different copy later.

Match CAM, Tool Data, and the Post-Processor

The CAM package must name the stock, datum, tool identity, cutting geometry, tool projection, operation order, clearances, and target post-processor. Verify that units, arcs, spindle commands, tool changes, and controller dialect match the actual machine rather than a generic profile.

Rebuild the Physical Setup From the Handoff Record

At the machine, verify stock orientation, fixture, clamp and rapid clearance, work origin, tool, spindle state, and machine envelope. Preview the boundary and first moves above the work. A correct file can still fail when the physical datum or tool does not match the recorded setup.

Archive the Released Job and Its Proof

Store the approved source, CAM project, posted file, software and post versions, setup sheet, inspection result, and accepted sample or measurement record together. If any upstream item changes, issue a new revision and repeat the dependent checks instead of overwriting the released package.
